“Bạn Đến Chơi Nhà”, direct translation for “Friends visiting House” is a series of activities emerged from our friends of all disciplines who visit ba-bau AIR, to share and introduce about practices, current work, archive or dialogue between themselves and the communities. The series includes collaboration, talk, screening, gathering, happening, and more. Actually, the program existed way before we got to name it in 2022.

It will be around the theme of "co-habitation", as you already visited us through our stories or you did not visit us before, we invite you to visit us during that time or send us anything you want to present in the group show. It can be in any medium to display, and at the same time can be activations. It will be potluck show with potluck artworks and then potluck sales the last day of the show with the party. We will live together inside the space (on the floor) and at the same time it means inside the show as well.

It is what it is: a free-form conversation through the act of gathering, cooking, drinking, eating and being together. Each session is an “extended” conversation among host(s), invited guest(s) and participants of cross disciplinaries, ages, and interests, in order to stimulate connections and sharing by organic interaction in a casual, intimate setting that one does not usually have with the selected crowd. Inspired by our “trà dư tửu hậu” culture of lingering and longing for the sweetness aftertaste of drinking tea or wine, our kitchen talks often happen at evening time and can expand until the next day, depending on the flow, conversation, as people can freely join, leave, or relocate anytime.

We are constantly exploring this format.

Residency programs for artists and other practitioners are our origin and are our continued mission. We believe that residency is a useful tool for artists to introduce a much needed change of environment where they can focus on their production, research, or more. As we experimented with the residency form, our residency has grown to embody an expanded form. The residents can be from any discipline, including but not limited to artists. The goal can be research, a series of tasks, or a purposeful lull. The duration can be between 2 and 6 months or more. All parameters of the residency are subject to being mutually defined by the resident and ba-bau. By pursuing a fluid form, we hope to give the residents the best environment to achieve their objectives.

Resident-đi is a multi-city residency program in collaboration with Then Cafe (Hue), Sao La Collective (Da Lat), and Nhat Q. Vo (Ben Tre), sponsored by the Japan Foundation. Through an open call, Kieu-Anh Nguyen and Duong Thanh Quang were selected to be the inaugural resident artists for their strong focus on local interactions. Each artist spent one month in each of their three residency options, in the order of their choice. Duong Thanh Quang’s residency concluded with an exhibition at the APD Center for Art Patronage and Development. Kieu-Anh Nguyen residency resulted in artworks and a report on local impermanent materials.
